Taxonomy There has been confusion between the names Philine striatula Monterosato, 1874, and Philine striatula Locard, 1897, because both are based on a manuscript name by Jeffreys. The former is a true Philine described from Sicily, whose types were reviewed by Oliverio & Tringali (2001). The latter is an enigmatic shell dredged by "Travailleur" expedition in deep-water of Bay of Biscay, was renamed as Philine talismani Sykes (1905) and recombined as Colobocephalus striatulus by Nordsieck (1972), and its original description contains no reference to Monterosato's writings.  [details]
