Description Length: 18-20 cm. Plumage: non-breeding plain brown above, on crown and patches at sides of chest narrowly joined at centre of breast, brownish throat patch; below white; fore and hind neck, throat and forehead white. Breeding has relatively wide black line through eye and over forehead and black band on chest; white line between frontal band and brown of crown. Immature like non-breeding adult but breast band broken and head brownish. Bare parts: iris brown; bill black with yellowish green at base of lower mandible; eyering bright yellow in breeding adult, duller but present in non-breeding adult and immature; feet and legs dull flesh, olive, or yellow green. Habitat: salt pans and flats bordering mangroves, estuaries and creeks, more common in inland fresh water habitats. Palearctic migrant. <389><391> [details]
