Morphology P. calliantha belong to the morphological P. pseudodelicatissima-complex, comprising species with narrow valves (ca. 1.5-2.5µm), a central nodule and uniseriate striae.
P. calliantha is mainly characterised by
* narrow valve width: 1.3-1.8µm
* poroids with several sectors (4-10) [details]

Taxonomy P. calliantha has previously been included in P. pseudodelicatissima sensu lato. At least some of the material described as toxic in previous references (as P. pseudodelicatissima) belong to P. calliantha[details]
