Taxonomy By the superficial resemblance of the fossilized siphon of Actinoceras bigsbyi, an ammonite, with the chitinous operculum of the serpulid Pomatostegus stellatus, the genus Actinoceras figured for a long time in Polychaete catalogues as a synonym of Pomatostegus.
