Nomenclature This record is probably unnecessary, but it may have been created by Kristian Fauchald before an ICZN decision was made on the concept of Pectinaria belgica. Malmgren (1866) newly created Lagis koreni for what was actually Pectinaria belgica, and applied P. belgica to a then undescribed mud-dwelling taxon. According to Nielsen et al (1977) "Malmgren's description of Lagis koreni refers to the sand-bottom species [later described and used by numerous authors] and the descnption of Pectinaria belgica [by Malmgren, 1866] covers the mud bottom species not described until that time; this created the [name] confusion now to be remedied." The crucial aspect of the ICZN Opinion 1225 was to adopt a neotype for Nereis cylindraria belgica, now Pectinaria belgica. The Opinion did not comment on Nielsen et al's proposed lectotype of Lagis koreni (presumably because it did not require any Commission action and was not requested in an amended proposal of 1978). Both proposed types were based on Malmgren's specimens in the Swedish Museum of Natural History, Stockholm. Thus Malmgren's incorrect identification of P. belgica became validated (as it was in wide use). [details]
