Synonymy Kirkendale et al.'s (2004) molecular analysis found the type species of Hyotissa nested among two nominal species of Parahyotissa and advocated retaining Hyotissa sensu lato for this group until monophyletic subclades can be defined in this group. Subsequent molecular analyses (Bieler et al. (2004), Mikkelsen & Bieler (2007: 114), Liu et al. (2011)) agreed with that approach, whereas other authors (e.g., Huber (2010: 614)) stayed with Harry's (1985) classification and sorted the taxa into Hyotissa and Parahyotissa based on morphological similarity.
