Descriptions of
Halgerda wasiniensis Eliot,
H. tesselata (Bergh.),
H. punctata Farran,
Sclerodoris tuberculata Eliot,
S. coriacea Eliot, and
S. apiculata (Alder & Hancock) from Tanzania and Kenya,
H. willeyi Eliot, from the Red Sea, and a new species of
Halgerda from Fiji are presented. The genus
Dictyodoris Bergh (type species
D. tesselata) is considered a synonym of
Halgerda Bergh.
It is shown that
Halgerda and
Sclerodoris are quite distinct genera, and previous attempts to synonymise the two are unjustified on a variety of anatomical grounds.
Sclerodoris rubra Eliot and
S. minor Eliot are synonymised with
S. tuberculata Eliot which is here designated the type species of the genus. Two species of
Sclerodoris from Hawaii, identified by Kay & Young (1969) as
Halgerda apiculata and
H. rubra, are considered to be wrongly identified and to be, in fact, new species.
