Classification Skuja established the protozoan genus Protaspis in 1939.He speculated later on about its phylogenetic affiliation to dinoflagellates because of nucleus similarities. Therefore and since that time, Protaspis is handled as possible dinoflagellate. Beside this, other researcher thought about other phylogenetic relationships. The question was solved in 2006, when Hoppenrath and Leander sequenced for the first a Protaspis isolate. [details]
Homonymy Protaspis Skuja, 1939, is nomenclaturally valid and legitimate for the purposes of the ICN as it was originally regarded as a dinoflagellate, a group traditionally treated as algae.
However, for the purposes of the ICZN Protaspis Skuja, 1939, is a later homomym of the Devonian fish genus Protaspis Bryant, 1933 (and thus illegitimate), the remit under which it now falls as it has been shown to be referable to the Class Thecofilosea (Order Cryomonadida, Family Protaspidae); see Howe et al. (2011).
Protapsa Cavalier-Smith in Howe et al., 2011 was proposed to replace Protaspis Skuja, 1939 under the ICZN [details]
