Spirorbis (Velorbis) gesae sp.n. is the type of a new subgenus, like Spirorbis but with collar undivided dorsally, and roofing over faecal groove. It was common on shore rocks in two sheltered locations, and has a tough, flexible, transparent tube-lining, which persists when calcification is eroded or broken. Twelve other spirorbid species were found on Madeira. One is previously known from the Canaries and three from the Mediterranean, while eight are common in warm seas, including the Pacific. The immigrant Spirorbis (Spirorbella) marioni was found only in the ports of Funchal and Porto Santo.
