The A A . study, both from the taxonomic ancl bionomic point of view, the Sponges of the Secca di Benda Palummo in the bay of Naples, on material collected between 45 and 70 m of depth. 68 species are been identified, 3 of which are new : Hymerabdia contracta, H. papillosa and Antho paucispina. Data on relative abundance of the collected species as well as an evaluation of the percentage of the substrate covered by them has been reported. Adocia simulans, a branching species, present in every dredging in the typical coralline zone ( biotope A), is the dominant species. In the peripheric part of this zone, on scattered, barely concretionated stone fragments ( bi otope B), the number of specimens and species of Sponges considerably decreases. A comparison with the pebbly zone oE the Secca della Gaiola shows that, quantitatively, the Secca di Benda Palummo is richer for number of specimens as well as species ; this fact is probably related with the characters of the bottom, which is mostly concretionated. Qualitatively the affinities are rather limited, w i th only 43% of species in common and with a freqnence of a prevailing, branching species as Adocia simulans, which is rare at the Secca della Gaiola. Among 14 new species described for the Secca della Gaiola and considered typical of pebbly bottoms, only 6 have been found at the Secca di Benda Palummo.
