Examination of plentiful material of the fossil bryozoan Characodoma halli Maplestone, the type species of Characodoma, from several Tertiary Victorian localities, and comparison with the Tertiary Schizoporella excubans Waters from the same region have revealed that the species are identical. The type species of Characodoma is thus S. excubans. Another Tertiary Victorian species, Lepralia nodulosa MacGillivray, has proved to be identical with L cleidostoma var. rotunda Waters, and is also referable to Characodoma. In addition, comparison of the Australian fossils with syntype material of the Recent species Cemellipora protrusa Thornely, the type species of Cleidochasma Harmer, has shown that they are all congeneric. As a result, Cleidochasma is a junior subjective synonym of Characodoma which is assigned to the Cleidochasmatidae. A number of genera which have been assigned to the Cleidochasmatidae in the past are more closely related to Stephanollona, Duvergier, which belongs to the Phidoloporidae Cabb & Horn. Many other Recent species assigned to both Characodoma and Cleidochasma that do not appear to belong to the Cleidochasmatidae require revision.
