Homonymy Magelona minuta Eliason, 1962 was an unavailable name because it was an unreplaced junior primary homonym to Magelona filiformis minuta Wilson, 1959. A replacement name was required. The two names are species-group primary homonyms, and it does not matter that one was a subspecies, and the other a species (Article 57.2), or that the Magelona filiformis minuta syntypes have been placed as a synonyms of the stem species, Magelona filiformis, or that Magelona filiformis minuta was originally described as a variety [note by G. Read, December 2018]
Instead of replacing the name Mortimer & Mills (2020) applied to the ICZN for the suppression of Magelona filiformis minuta in favour of junior homonym Magelona minuta Eliason. The ICZN in a brief Opinion 2507 (2024) suppressed Magelona filiformis minuta. It was already unused, although as mentioned this did not matter for the status of M minuta Eliason. [details]
