Type species Van Soest & Hooper (1993: 324-325) discovered that Carter described M. pusilla Carter, 1876, p. 239 and changed his mind over the name and used M. minutula in a Carter, 1880, p. 44. The exact wording is: M. minutula ('Annals', 1876, vol. xviii, p. 239, mendose script. 'pusilla', pl. XVI fig. 51, &c.). Van Soest & Hooper (1993) interpreted this as a mistake by Carter, but it is probably 'illegal' to change a species name once it has alrady been published. The conclusion must be that the type species is Microciona pusilla and that Microciona minutula is an objective junior synonym. Van Soest & Hooper (1993) cited the wrong page number (p. 437 instead 44) of Carter's (1880) attempt to change the name. Also the name minutula was not published in 1876 but in 1880. [details]
