Diagnosis Original diagnosis by McIntosh (1915: 176): "Snout with a bluntly bifid median rostrum and a bulging process of the peristomium on each side. Eyes, two or three pairs on each side of the median ridge. Body as in Spio, but terminating in two dorsal and two ventral subulate cirri, the dorsal being thicker. Branchiae from the first foot to the posterior end. Bristles as in Spio." [details]
Etymology Not stated. The name of the genus is composed by the prefix eu-, meaning 'true' or 'genuine', followed by the name of the genus Spio Fabricius, 1785, type of the family Spionide Grube, 1850, and probably it intended to highlight the closeness between the two genera: "Body as in Spio [...]. Bristles as in Spio" (McIntosh, 1915: 176). [details]
Type species Foster (1971:33) stated she designates Euspio mesnili as type species of Euspio. E. mesnili precedes E. gravieri in McIntosh (1915:176 - British Annelid monograph) where they and the genus are first described. [details]
