Etymology In a footnote Caullery explained the genus was named for the expedition vessel H. M. S. Siboga, combined with the Greek word for thread, which in Latin is Linum i (neuter). He also wrote "Ce nom, de formation, un peu barbare, rappelle l'origine et l'aspect de l'animal, sans rien suggérer de ses affinités". As the vessel Siboga belonged to the Dutch East Indian Government, the origin of the name "Siboga" may be from "Sibolga" (formerly sometimes Siboga), a city and a port located in the natural harbour of Sibolga Bay on the west coast of North Sumatra province (1.74, 98.78), in Indonesia. [details]
Grammatical gender Siboglinum is neuter as '-linum' is a neuter noun. Almost all taxonomists subsequent to Caullery (1914) have created adjectival names that are gender-compliant neuter . The exception is S. longimanus Ivanov, 1957 (his other names are neuter). [details]
