Quatrefages, Armand de 1865. Note sur la classification des Annélides. Comptes rendus hebdomadaires des séances de l'Académie des sciences, Paris 60(13): 586-600., available online at http://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/page/3713886 page(s): 593; note: Listed in a key, non-latinized as French informal 'Marphyse', therefore Marphysa is not an available name from this publication [details]
Present Inaccurate Introduced: alien Containing type locality

Etymology Not stated by Quatrefages, and not known. Marphysa does not appear to be a known word in classical Latin or Greek. However, Greek 'physa', a feminine noun meaning bladder or bubble, occurs outside of Annelida as part of several compound genera names. At best we can treat the gender of Marphysa as reliably feminine as Quatrefages did not change the suffixes of the 3 or 4 adjectival Eunice names he recombined in Marphysa, and later authors have also treated it as feminine. [details]
Grammatical gender Feminine, an assumption mainly based on the early Marphysa names created and that 'physa' in Greek is a feminine noun. The etymology is uncertain. [details]
Publication date Quatrefages first book volume is dated 1866, although the title page has 1865. This is because of comments about the date by Wright in the 1866 Zoological Record. Marphysa genus and several Marphysa species first are published in this volume, and the date is 1866 (we have no way of knowing if Wright is correct with his 1866 availability date for the books). However, as informal French 'Marphyse' the name appears, without species names link, in a key in a classification extract Quatrefages published twice in 1865, first as "Note sur la classification des annelides" and then again as "Note sur la Classification des Annélides, et résponse aux observations de M. Claparède" in a different journal. Some taxonomists date Marphysa from the appearance of informal 'Marphyse" in these publications, but this seems unwarranted [details]
Type species Type species Nereis sanguinea Montagu 1813 in Hartman catalogue, p.320. Designation must have been a subsequent designation as Quatrefages included several taxa without indicating a type (although presenting the description of M. sanguinea first). [details]Unreviewed
Habitat Known from seamounts and knolls [details]
