Diagnosis Original diagnosis by Kinberg (1865: 171): "Papillae pharyngis corneae, distantes, conicae, completae, appendices segmentorum partis corporis anterioris et posterioris aequales." [details]
Etymology Not stated, uncertain. Neanthes could refer to the Greek classic writer Neanthes of Cyzicus (3rd century BC). [details]
Type designation Neanthes vaalii is listed first but otherwise is not selected as type species. Perhaps Hartman 1959 effectively designated it (Hartman catalogue: 249), if not selected elsewhere earlier. Bakken & Wilson (2005: 527) wrongly state the type species is N. vaalii by original designation. [details]Unreviewed
Habitat Known from seamounts and knolls [details]
