Homonymy There is a protozoan Spirodiscus homonym (Ehrenberg, 1832: 68) in “Protoctista”, unicellular organisms. However, this organism currently is currently dealt with under the botanical code, thus it doesn't prevent use of Spirodiscus under the zoological code (the two are hemihomonyms). Spirodiscus fulvus Ehrenberg 1832, the type species, is a junior synonym of Ophiocytium parvulum (Perty) A.Braun.[see AlgaeBase https://www.algaebase.org/search/species/detail/?species_id=156601].
The zoological homonymy is with Spirodiscus Stein, 1850 in Mollusca, created as a subgenus of Planorbis for Helix cornea Linnaeus, 1758. . Currently in WoRMS Stein's subgenus is tagged as a homonym of Spirodiscus Ehrenberg, but as stated above this is not relevant. Planorbis (Spirodiscus) Stein, 1850 is also currently treated as junior to Planorbarius Duméril, 1805, but again this is not relevant for the homonymy of Spirodiscus Fauvel, 1909 to Spirodiscus Stein, 1850 p.73. The molluscan Spirodiscus was also used for Planorbis (Spirodiscus) barettii Sacco, 1886 and Planorbis (Spirodiscus) scoliostoma Westerlund, 1898.
The Annelida Spirodiscus requires a replacement name.

Taxonomic remark The genus Spirodiscus has been synonymized with Nogrobs for a decade, however, the results of comparative SEM studies of tube wall ultrastructures (Kupriyanova & Ippolitov, 2015) show very different crystal arrangement in Spirodiscus and in the type species of genus Nogrobs, thus indicating that these genera should not be synonymised. [details]
