Type species Early nomenclatural history of the type is not straighforward. For instance Petersen (2000:318) maintained Otto (1821) renamed Ranzani's Thalassema scutatus as Sternaspis thalassemoides, noting it was "a common practice at that time". This is not obvious from the text, but Otto certainly discusses Ranzani on his pages 626-627. Petersen correctly recognised Otto's new genus's sole described taxon, Sternaspis thalassemoides was the type species, which could not be Thalassema scutatus Ranzani or the earlier (not validly published fide ICZN) Echinorhynchus scutatus (or Echinorinchus scutatus) of Renier, 1807 or 1804, as stated in for example the Hartman catalogue.
