Diagnosis Original diagnosis by Holthe (1976: 59): ''Thorax with a restricted number of bristle-bearing segments, abdomen long with numerous segments. Prostomium-peristomium without eyes. On each of the segments 2 and 3, one pair of principally dichotomous branchiae with very short stems. Lateral lobes present, but not much developed, on segments 2, 3, and 4. Notosetae beginning on segment 4 and extending throughout the thorax. Ventral uncini beginning on segment 5. Uncini in double rows from segment 11 throughout thorax, and in a small number of the abdominal segments. Ventral shields present in the anterior part of thorax. Notosetae with finely serrated brim on one side. Uncini small, avicular.''
Subsequent diagnosis by Lavesque et al (2021: 36) "Transverse prostomium attached to dorsal surface of upper lip; basal part as a thick crest, eyespots absent; distal part shelf-like. Buccal tentacles all uniformly cylindrical. Peristomium restricted to lips; relatively short upper lip, hood-like; swollen, cushion-like and mid-ventral lower lip. Segment 1 reduced dorsally, expanded ventrally, with low mid-ventral lobe marginal to mouth; segment 2-4 with pairs of low lateral lobes. Anterior segments highly glandular ventrally, with discrete, smooth, rectangular to trapezoidal mid-ventral shields. Two pairs of arborescent branchiae, on segment 2-3, much shorter than body width, with short main stems. Rectangular to conical notopodia beginning on segment 4, extending for 13 segments, until segment 16; notochaetae all medially limbate and distally serrated. Neuropodia beginning on segment 5, as low ridges until segment 20, shortly after end of notopodia, and short pinnules posteriorly; neurochaetae as short-handled avicular uncini with high crest, in completely separated double rows, in face-to-face arrangement, on segment11-20. Nephridial papillae present on segment 3, genital papillae on segment 6-8, between parapodial lobes. Pygidium smooth." [details]
Etymology Not stated. The generic epithet is composed by the prefix of Greek origin para-, meaning 'beside', 'next to' or 'near', and the name of the genus Amphitrite O.F. Müller, 1771, and refers presumably to the morphological affinities between the two genera. [details]
Status The status of Paramphitrite Holthe based on morphology with respect to Amphitrite is unresolved. It would be a junior synonym following Jirkov (2020) who synonymized the type species of Paramphitrite to the much older Amphitrite birulai Ssolowiew, 1899. The two species occur in the same geographic area (White Sea & Norway), and evidently Holthe later (1986) suspected they were the same (comment in Lavesque et al 2021). However, Lavesque et al (2021) accept the species synonymy of the Paramphitrite type species, but reject this genus synonymy to Amphitrite for now as the [matching] characters mentioned by Jirkov "are perceived as being variable within both genera" and "and cannot be used to synonymise genera." Lavesque et al (2021) described a further species of Paramphitrite, namely P. dragovabeci [details]
