The species is very likely dedicated to Auguste Adolphe Marc Reynaud (b. Toulon, 07 May 1804 - d. Toulon, 04 February 1887), a French naval surgeon and naturalist, who participated in several cruises worldwide, namely aboard the French corvette "La Chevrette" in 1827/1828. During these cruises he collected numerous zoological specimens, which he donated to the Muséum National d'Histoire Naturelle. [details]
Publication date Audouin & Milne Edwards in Cuvier 1830:202 introduced "Les Alciopes" and the nomen nudum Alciopa reynaudii. Some authors (eg Dauvin et al. (2003)) cite this date or 1829 for the species, but the name was not validly published (with a description) until 1833. [details]
