Etymology The specific epithet tetrabranchia is composed by the prefix of Greek origin tetra-, meaning 'four', and by the Latin noun of Greek origin branchia, meaning 'gill', and refers to the presence of four branchiae on the species: ''On each of the segments 2 and 3, one pair of branchiae (hence the specific name tetrabranchia)'' (Holthe, 1976: 60). Synonymy May be a junior synonym of Paramphitrite birulai (Ssolowiew, 1899) according to Jirkov (2001: 519). Subsequently Jirkov (2020) revalidated Amphitrite birulai and made Paramphitrite tetrabanchia, the type species of Paramphitrite, the junior synonym of Amphitrite birulai. However, Lavesque et al (2021) have rejected the generic synonymy, although they comment "about the need to find additional morphological characters in order to perform a more robust revision of the [two] genera, supported by molecular data."
