Nomenclature The gender of the genus name Thorectandra is here assumed to be masculine because the author, R. Von Lendenfeld, assigned a species adjective name with male suffix (Thorectandra corticatus). The second species named in the original publication in which Thorectandra was erected, T. choanoides can be of both masculine or feminine gender. [details]
Type species De Laubenfels (1936: 26) subsequently made Thorectandra corticatus the type species of Thorectandra. Bergquist (1980: 472) was apparently unaware of this and proceeded to name T.choanoides (Bowerbank, 1872 as Halispongia) the type. The latter designation is invalid. [details]
