Nomenclature This genus has a complicated nomenclatural history. Strictly speaking, Azorinus Récluz, 1869 is an unjustified emendation of Azor Leach, a manuscript name made available separately by J. de C. Sowerby (1824) with Sanguinolaria compressa J. de C. Sowerby, 1824 as type species, and by Brown (1844). From the synonymy list and distribution given by Récluz (p. 66), it is obvious that he addressed Azor> Brown, 1844, which is preoccupied by Azor J. de C. Sowerby, 1824 (a subjective junior synonym of Gari Schumacher, 1817 and Psammotaea Lamarck, 1818 in the family Psammobiidae) [details]
