Taxonomy The distinctness of the genus Catriona was the subject of considerable debate. Burn (1973), Williams and Gosliner (1979) and Gosliner and Griffiths (1981) all suggested that the bristled denticles and pre-radular teeth of Catriona are sufficient as unique characters of the genus. Miller (1977, 2004) and Brown (1980) had a different interpretation and considered the bristles an unsatisfactory diagnostic character, referring to Catriona as a junior synonym of Cuthona. Results from Cella et al. (2016) demonstrate that Catriona only becomes monophyletic with the inclusion of Tenellia adspersa, a result which renders it a junior synonym of Tenellia.
The species currently held in WoRMS as accepted under Catriona are nevertheless left unchanged until their status is re-evaluated. [details]
