Freshwater records under this name from a tropical brownwater lake in Brazil, by Branco et al. (op. cit.), most likely concern Brachionus quadridentatus f. cluniorbicularis Skorikov. The specimen presented in Fig. 5 clearly shows a distinct sheath surrounding the foot opening, a character diagnostic in B. quadridentatus but absent in B. rotundiformis._x000d_
Originally proposed as infrasubspecific variant, made available nomenclaturally at subspecific rank by Kutikova (1970:587). [details]
