Taxonomy  Malmgrenia versus Malmgreniella. According to Pettibone (1993, also citing earlier comments from Hanley, 1987), Malmgrenia...  
Taxonomy  Malmgrenia versus Malmgreniella. According to Pettibone (1993, also citing earlier comments from Hanley, 1987), Malmgrenia whiteavesii McIntosh from Gulf of St. Lawrence, Canada, and the type of Malmgrenia, was poorly described by McIntosh (1874) and is just fragments, and the genus is indeterminable. Pettibone decided that species of Malmgrenia that should be referred to Malmgreniella Hartman, 1967, are "harmothoid species having a close commensal relationship with other invertebrates. The elytra are delicate, with microtubercles, if present, confined to small anterior groups, sometimes with a few scattered on the surface; papillae are absent or confined to micropapillae, rarely with some longer lateral papillae." She recombined M. andreapolis to Hartman's Malmgreniella (type species M. dicirra Hartman, 1967, from subantarctic Pacific water). McIntosh (1874) indicates Malmgrenia is a new genus in a footnote, just briefly describes M. whiteavesii, and it seems his paper is for him a preliminary one. However, the ICZN (2009) accepted (17 for, 3 against) a proposal that Malmgrenia andreapolis McIntosh (1874, but a later paper) from St Andrews, Scotland be designated type species for Malmgrenia. This would allow for the re-establishment of Malmgrenia in the next treatment of the genus, but no author subsequently (in a code-valid publication) formally did this for some years (but see Jourde et al, 2015)

Jourde et al. (2015) comment that: "Following ICZN Opinion (2009), which ruled that the usage of the generic name Malmgrenia McIntosh, 1874 is to be conserved, at least the north-east Atlantic and Mediterranean species should now be attributed to this genus", and they key and table the relevant species, but do not give a formal synonymy listing. These combinations have been updated in WoRMS, with the remainder of Malmgreniella unchanged in WoRMS pending a taxonomic treatment of them or a published formal synonymy of Malmgreniella (or type species M. dicirra). [details]
