From editor or global species database
Taxonomy Hooper & Wiedenmayer (1994) assigned this species to the Australian Spongia hispida Lamarck, 1814. However, since (a) Lendenfeld assigned ten varieties to this species, (b) these varieties were from many different localities all over the world, (c) no single variety so far has been indicated as the typical variety, and (d) there are many subsequent records of this species from non-Australian localities, this assignment is premature and should be reviewed based on an overview study. For the time being we refer the species Spongia (Spongia) irregularis to Spongia (Spongia) hispida because irregularis is a junior primary homonym of Euspongia officinalis var. irregularis Schulze, 1879.
