Classification Since first described Longosomatidae (as Heterospio) were placed in the Spionida group. However, Wilson (2000: 193 in Beesley et al) suggested Longosomatidae had similarities to Cirratulidae for several characters including their cinctures of chaetae and their long filamentous branchiae rather than the short strap-like branchiae of Spionidae. Blake & Maciolek (2019 Handbook of Zoology) and Rouse et al (2022, Annelida book) added their support for this placement, with Rouse et al (2022: 243) presenting a molecular-based cladogram of the relationship. [details]
Nomenclature Borowski (1995) altered the spelling from Hartman's Longosomidae to Longosomatidae. He appears to state the 'type species' (of Longosomatidae) is Heterospio longissima. However, a family doesn't have a type species, also Longosoma remains the type genus, regardless of its synonymy with Heterospio. [details]
Status Rouse et al (2022) regard family Longosomatidae as a redundant artificial rank as there is only one valid genus (Heterospio). This attitude seems to assume there will never be two or more genera needing a collective (family) name to group them. However, at any time Heterospio could be split into two as the number of known species increases. [details]
