Etymology The generic name Microsyllis is composed by the prefix of Greek origin micro-, meaning 'small', and the name of the genus Syllis Savigny in Lamarck, 1818, type genus of the family Syllidae, and probably refers to the small size of the type species, Microsyllis brevicirrata Claparède, 1863, stated to be only 2 mm long: "Körper 2 Mm. lang" (Claparède, 1863: 42).
