Distribution Virtually all Eurasia, except of South and Southeast Asia, where R. auricularia is replaced by aboriginal species of Radix, such as R. rubiginosa and R. rufescens. The presence of R. auricularia in Vietnam and South China needs confirmation. In India, this species occupies only the northern part of the country (Subba Rao, 1989). In Northern Africa R. auricularia is known from a few localities in Algeria (van Damme, 1984) and Tunesia (Vinarski, unpublished); also known from Yemen and Saudi Arabia (Brown, 1994). Widely introduced in North America (Burch, 1982); Alaska may represent a part of the native range of this species. Recorded as invasive species in New Zealand (Charleston & Climo 1979) [details]

Type locality Europe, in rivers and stagnant waterbodies (“Habitat in Europae fluviis, stagnis”; Linnaeus, 1758: 775) [details]
