Nomenclature The taxonomic history for names of this spelling is complicated. However, "Siphonostoma Otto, 1821 is a silent (de facto, with no explanation) changed spelling substitute by Otto for Siphostoma Otto, 1920, which is a junior homonym to Siphostoma Rafinesque, 1810 in Pisces, if that name is available. Salazar-Vallejo (2012) comments that: "Støp-Bowitz (1948:8) correctly indicated that Siphostoma Otto, 1820 was preoccupied, and recognized Flabelligera as the valid name for the group, but he overlooked the emended name (Siphonostoma Otto, 1821)". In subsequent works Flabelligera was incorrectly adopted as the valid name, and Siphonostoma was largely disused. Salazar-Vallejo (2012) comments that "Flabelligera Sars, 1829 became a nomen protectum", but this is not correct as the Code requirements are not met. In practice Siphonostoma Otto 1821 has been simply disused for the sake of stability. [details]
