Authority The Hartman catalogue under the entry for genus Spirographis wrongly attributes the authorship of Spirographis spallanzanii to Viviani (1805) who created genus Spirographis. Instead it is clear from Viviani (1805) that he is deriving his usage as Spirographis spallanzanii from the existing names for this prominent species, including Tubularia spallanzanii which thus must be the original name, with Viviani moving it in a new combination to his new genus as the type species. This wrong attribution is commented on by Knight-Jones & Perkins (1998: 395) although without mentioning the instance in Hartman's catalogue. [details]
Synonymy Synonymies of "spallanzanii" usages are very complex and resolving them in WoRMS is not yet complete. Please see Knight-Jones and Perkins (1998) for full background. Those authors designated a single neotype for the four names Tubularia spallanzanii Gmelin, Serpula penicillus Linnaeus, Teredo melitensis Bergius, and Amphitrite ventilabrum Gmelin, which they placed junior to Sabella spallanzanii to stabilise the well-known name.
