Synonymy The synonymies of the group of species related to Sabella pavonina are complex, and the original works together with Knight-Jones & Perkins (1998) should be consulted to understand how current usages arose. The Hartman catalogue referred Sabella sarsii to Sabella penicillus, but this may have been to the concept of Savigny (1822), which according to Knight-Jones & Perkins (1998) is properly Sabella pavonina. Sabella penicillus (Linnaeus) is a senior name to Sabella spallanzanii but is disused. Hartman used the name Spirographis spallanzanii, and did not have a 'spallanzanii' in her Sabella list. So Sabella sarsii according to Knight-Jones & Perkins is a junior synonym of Sabella pavonina. This makes sense if S. spallanzanii is used for the Mediterranean species and S. pavonina for the north-east Atlantic species. [details]
