A remarkable intraspecific variability in the family of Sylidae has been pointed out through the study of small morphological characters on great number of individuals. The careful examinations of many living specimens along with the study of their ecological conditions has allowed to distinguish some geographical sub species of Syllis spongicola, S. variegata, Exogone hebes, Autolytus lugens (namely: S. spongicola tentaculata Marion, S. variegata profunda n. ssp., E. hebes hibernica Southern, E. hebes meridionalis n. ssp., A. lugens mediterranea Cognetti), and two criptical species of genus Autolytus: A. aurantiacus Claparède, and A. macrophthalmus Marenzeller.
