Three new species of Poecilochaetus Claparède, 1875 (P. spinulosus, P. tricirratus and P. hystricosus) are described from Hong Kong. Following an attempt to standardize setal terminology, species characters within the genus are re-examined and 6 species groups identified. The posterior notosetae are of particular taxonomic importance. Unfortunately approximately half the recognized species are known only from anterior fragments and consequently are essentially indeterminable. Elicodasia Laubier and Ramos, 1973 and Genus A MiIIigan and Gilbert, 1984 are re-examined and synonymized with Poecilochaetus. Poecilochaetus gallardoi Pilato and Cantone, 1976 is possibly synonymous with P. paratropicus Gallardo. 1968. Trochochaeta diverapoda (Hoagland, 1920) is newly recorded from Hong Kong. The specimens are described and compared to the type material from the Philippines. T. orissae (Fauvel. 1932) from India is tentatively referred to T. diverapoda.
