Authority The family Aeolosomatidae was described as new in two occasions. It was originally described by Levinsen (1884: 221), but this description was largely overlooked by most authors for over a century, with the exception of Bell (1885: Verm. 15) and Lang (1886: 247), who included the name in the volumes for the year of 1884 of "The Zoological Record" and “Zoologischer Jahresbericht”, respectively. Shortly after, and apparently unaware of Levinsen’s description, Beddard (1895: 176) described the family Aeolosomatidae de novo. The authority of the family seems to have not been referred for decades, until the publication of the monograph by Bunke (1967), who considered it to be “Beddard 1895”, once again overlooking Levinsen’s publication. This authority has been repeated by other recent authors (e.g.: Fauchald & Rouse, 1997; Beesley et al., 2000; Pinder, 2010), but the correct authorship is definitely “Levinsen, 1884”. [details]
Classification Nowadays most people do not affiliate Aeolosomatidae + Potamodrilidae to Oligochaeta or Clitellata. They may be treated as a separate small class (or order?) Aphanoneura Vejdovsky, 1884 among the large paraphyletic group of Polychaeta = non-clitellate Annelida. As an exception, recently Christoffersen (2012) has treated Aphanoneura under Oligochaeta s. l. in his phylogenetic classification - but separately from the "true" clitellates (oligochaetes + leech-like worms) called by him Euclitellata.
