Taxonomy Originally described from off Sagres (Portugal) in deep water; it is doubtful whether the neotype designated by van Aartsen, Goud & Gittenberger (2000) from shallow water in Ria de Arousa (Galicia) is really representative of the form meant by Jeffreys (1884) and illustrated by Peñas et al. (2006), or would render this a synonym of the coastal species Parthenina intterstincta; on these grounds it is also debatable if the neotype designation is valid because it does not fulfill ICZN Art 75.3.6. requiring "evidence that the neotype came as nearly as practicable from the original type locality" [details]
Type locality originally off Sagres, Portugal; from neotype (van Aartsen, Goud & Gittenberger, 2000): Ria de Arousa, Spain [details]
