The reproductive rate of Acartia tonsa on varying concentrations of six phytoplankton species was assayed in laboratory experiments. Some species supported higher reproductive rates than others, indicating that phytoplankton biomass in terms of volume, carbon, or nitrogen was not a good predictor of reproductive rate in A. tonsa. Estimates of reproductive rate derived from measures of phytoplankton biomass ingestion were only marginally better predictors of reproductive rate. Variations in the nutritional adequacy of phytoplankton species are hypothesized to explain these results.
