Present Inaccurate Introduced: alien Containing type locality

Taxonomy Sphyrapus malleolus was not formally described until 1886 by Norman & Stebbing (it was a nomen nudum when included in Sphyrapus n.g. by Sars, 1882). Although it was then designated as “type species” in 1886, Sieg, 1983b:109 has argued that the genus was properly described by Sars, 1882a, and that S. anomalus should be the type species. [details]
