GEBCO: discoverer and year of discovery (en): History: Named in association with Cape Runaway on the adjacent New Zealand mainland, which was named by Capt. Cook in 1769 after Maori in canoes, who had approached Cook's ship in a hostile way, hurried away after shots were fired at them. |
