GEBCO: discoverer and year of discovery (en): Discoverer: U.S. oceanographic research vessel "Hayes". Year of discovery: 1981. History: Named after Gilberto Menezes Amado Filho (1960-2019), a Brazilian marine biologist. He is known for his studies on marine biodiversity and the reefs of Amazônia, the Abrolhos archipelago and many Brazilian oceanic islands. He was involved in projects relating to pollution of the sea by heavy minerals and to cell biology, being the first Brazilian researcher to receive the Luigi Provazoli Award, for the discovery of a new cell organelle. |
