GEBCO: discoverer and year of discovery (en): Discoverer: Philippines survey vessel "Hydrographer Presbitero". Year of discovery: 2010. History: Named after Dr. Edgardo D Gomez (1938–2019), a Philippine national scientist and renowned marine biologist, known for his contributions to marine ecosystems which became the bases for the management of and conservation programs for the Philippines’ marine resources. He led the first national-scale assessment of coral reef damage, leading to worldwide conservation initiatives. He established coral reef reserve / restoration sites that highlight opportunities to increase productivity as well as the physical and aesthetic condition of reefs. He transplanted coral fragments and cultured giant clams to enhance damaged reef areas and reestablish natural breeding populations of clams with the goal of attracting more fish and macro-invertebrates and increasing biodiversity. He also founded the UP Marine Science Institute, raising it from a small grassroots movement to a world-class research and teaching institution of marine science.
