GEBCO: discoverer and year of discovery (en): Discoverer: British Royal Research Ship "Discovery". Year of discovery: 2019. History: The British Navy held garrison on Tristan da Cunha until 1817. Following its disbandment, William Glass, then a corporal in the Royal Artillery, requested to be left behind with his family, thus effectively initiating the island’s permanent settlement. Corporal William Glass ruled over the island community from this point, until his death in 1853. |
