GEBCO: discoverer and year of discovery (en): Discoverer: U.S. research vessel "Vema". Year of discovery: 1964. History: "Peri" is the main character of “O Guarany” novel, written in 1857 by José de Alencar (1829-1877), a very important name in Brazilian Literature, who was born in Fortaleza, in the nearby State of Ceará, Brazilian northeastern region. Peri, a noble savage, had a platonic love affair for Ceci, the white daughter of a wealthy farmer. Peri was the hero who fully devoted to his sweetheart, idealizing her as his mistress. At the end of the novel, Peri performed a heroic act of sacrifice by taking poison, so that the Aimorés cannibal tribe would die poisoned after eating his flesh. However, he was convinced to take the antidote and was saved. He converted to Christianity and escaped with Ceci. |
