GEBCO: discoverer and year of discovery (en): History: First appeared as D'Urville Seavalley on Coastal Bathymetry Series (CBS) chart 'Cook Strait' in 1980. Altered to the dual name Rangitoto-ki-te-Tonga / d'Urville Valley to restore the Maori part of the name of the associated nearby Rangitoto ki te Tonga / d'Urville Island.. "Rangitoto-ki-te-Tonga" means ‘red heavens look to the south’. The d'Urville part of the island's name is a reminder of the skilful seamanship of the French explorer Jules Sébastien César Dumont d'Urville (1790-1842), who led a dangerous expedition through Te Aumiti / French Pass in New Zealand. |
