Abstract
A state-of-the-art review of chemical exchange between ocean and atmosphere is presented, including discussion of flux measurement techniques. The exchange of particulate matter, CO2, sulphur species, hydrocarbons and halogenated compounds, as well as the role of microbes and phytoplankton in the production of volatile species are discussed. The influence of atmospheric input of nutrients on ocean productivity and the role of photochemical processes in air/sea exchange is explored. Recommendations are made for future research in the field of air/sea exchange, with emphasis on the development of flux measurement techniques, the study of nutrient inputs to the sea, and the role of photochemical processes and biological activity.
