Abstract
    An expert meeting, attended mainly by faculty members and researchers in the marine sciences in Arab universities, was convened in Aqaba, Jordan, 1-5 December 1985. The participants discussed the objectives of teaching and research in the marine sciences and the present situation in this field in Arab universities. They studies the existing educational systems at undergraduate level as well as postgraduate studies and related research. The principal obstacles facing development and co-operation in this field were pointed out. The recommendation of the meeting is given in Annex 1. A working paper presented by Unesco to the meeting and entitled 'Marine Sciences in the Arab Universities' is given as Annex V.
