Because of the heterogeneity of the marine ecosystem a variety of sampling and extraction techniques have to be used to obtain relevant fractions for hydrocarbon or petroleum oil component analyses. Considerable care has to be taken to obtain representative samples and also to minimise sample contamination. The application of n-alkane analyses to these problems is described and the problems in interpretation are highlighted.
