The free living nematofauna of Belgium: a review. The free living and plant parasitic nematodes of Belgium have been studied since the early thirties only. The research was done almost exclusively in Ghent (State University, former Agricultural High school and State Nematological Research Centre) and started with L. DE CONINCK who created a "nematological school". The Belgian nonzooparasitic nematofauna comprises more than 500 species, more than half of which are marine species. In view of their abundance and importance as bio-indicators of pollution, the study of nematodes should be continued, preferably as a coordinated, European survey.
